Middle School at Lyceum Kennedy (Manhattan Campus) consists of 4 levels of study, from the sixth grade through ninth grade. Our curriculum follows the guidelines of the French Ministry of Education but we also incorporated English Language Arts, English Mathematics and United States History classes. Basic knowledge of the English language is strongly recommended; however, it is not a prerequisite for admission, as beginner English speakers will receive ESL classes.
In addition to language arts, the academic program includes a careful balance of Mathematics, Science, History and Geography (Social Studies), Civics, Computer Science, Physical Education, Music and Arts appropriate to each grade level and in accordance with the French Educational System.
Beginning in sixth grade, students study Spanish as a second foreign language (besides English, which is considered the first foreign language) and are introduced to Latin classes starting seventh grade. Middle School students have 55 minutes classes taught by specialized teachers.
The curriculum is designed to support our students for their transition between Middle and High Schools. By developing autonomy and responsibility skills as there is a noticeable increase in homework at the Middle School level. At this level, there are also new opportunities for co-curricular and extra-curricular activities through community service.
In ninth grade, students must take the Diplôme National du Brevet exam which comprises continuous assessment throughout ninth grade, French, Mathematics and History/Geography exams, validation of an A2 level in English (as part of the European references for Foreign Languages), and the Internet and Computer Studies exam. This year, History of Art will be an additional oral exam.
