Lyceum Kennedy welcomes students who are not fluent French speakers. Indeed, one-third of our students are native French speakers, one-third are English speakers, and one third speaks another language at home that is neither English or French.

For these students, depending on their age, we have two options:

  • Nursery to Kindergarten Total Immersion Program: students who do not speak French are immersed in the regular classes, which follow both the French and the American curricula. In addition, they will attend French as a Foreign Language (FLE) classes in order to progress faster.
  • 1st through 4th Grade Transition Class (Ardsley Campus only): this program has been designed for students who do not speak French and cannot attend the regular French academic program of their grade and whose parents wish them to start learning French. During French instruction time, students who are in the Transition Class attend special FLE classes and they will learn to speak, read and write in French. This program covers the same subject areas as a regular French academic grade but with a specific approach to the learning style of non-fluent speakers. The Transition Class students attend mathematics, science, arts and sports with their assigned class. They will also be taught the New York State Standardized English curriculum with their peers.
